Functions

The IMF works for global prosperity by promoting:

  • the balanced expansion of world trade,
  • stability of exchange rates,
  • avoidance of competitive devaluations, and
  • orderly correction of balance of payments problems

Decision Making Process

The day-to-day operations of the IMF are carried out by an Executive Board and an international staff under the leadership of a Managing Director and three Deputy Managing Directors; each member of the management team is drawn from a different region of the board. The powers of the Executive Board are delegated to it by the Board of Governors, on which all member countries are represented.

In practice, decisions are taken by consensus.

Why does this organization deal with Net governance?

While the IMF has not taken an explicit decision to deal with IP-based networks and people's activities in cyberspace per se, these matters implicitly fall under the IMF's scope. Indeed, today it would be impossible for the organization to carry out its mandate in a way which didn't spill over into Net governance.
